# SWIRL Legal

> SWIRL 5 is the knowledge-authority layer for legal AI. Tools like Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Harvey can draft, summarize, and run workflows, but they do not know which document, version, or precedent a law firm or legal department has actually approved. SWIRL 5 sits beneath those tools and provides that answer - federated, permission-aware retrieval with traceable citations across Microsoft 365, SharePoint, iManage, NetDocuments, legal publishers, and curated firm knowledge - without copying or re-indexing the underlying records.

SWIRL Legal positions SWIRL as an open architecture for legal AI built on three clean layers: (1) connectors that query each system with the user's existing permissions; (2) a federation and re-ranking layer that produces an authoritative result set; and (3) an answer layer that can be wired to Claude for Legal, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Harvey, or any LLM the firm chooses. Every answer is traceable to a source document and version.
